From Hubli to London: My Journey as a Designer at London Fashion Week
By Madhu M Doddamani – 3rd Year Fashion Design Student, NIF Global, Hubli
I’m Madhu M Doddamani, a third-year Fashion Design student at NIF Global, Hubli. With a deep-rooted passion for creativity and aesthetics, I am committed to exploring innovative design concepts and staying ahead of trends in the ever-evolving world of fashion. My academic journey has equipped me with a blend of technical expertise and artistic insight, empowering me to transform ideas into expressive and impactful designs.
In 2025, I had the prestigious opportunity to participate in London Fashion Week through NIF Global, Hubli—a platform that enabled me to showcase my creativity on an international stage and gain invaluable industry exposure. The theme of my showcase was Fusion and Sustainability, where I explored the harmonious blend of traditional Indian aesthetics with contemporary fashion, emphasizing eco-conscious practices and responsible design.
I immersed myself in extensive research and creative exploration. I chose to draw inspiration from the intricate beauty of the Shilabalikas (also known as Madanikas) of the Chennakeshava Temple in Beluru, Karnataka—timeless icons of elegance, grace, and artistic mastery.
These exquisite 12th-century stone sculptures, crafted during the Hoysala dynasty, are celebrated for their intricate detailing and lifelike postures. Each Shilabalika represents a celestial maiden depicted in expressive poses—playing instruments, applying makeup, or performing classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam. Their delicate garments, intricate jewelry, and emotive expressions reflect the exceptional craftsmanship of the era and embody the spiritual connection between art, divinity, and daily life.
Among these captivating figures, I drew inspiration particularly from Shukha Priya, shown gracefully holding a parrot—a symbol of charm and eloquence—and Gandharva Kanyā, a celestial musician embodying rhythm, grace, and divine beauty. Their elegance and storytelling depth made them the perfect muses for our garment design.
After presenting the concept and design at college, I was thrilled to have my work officially selected—an incredible affirmation of the cultural depth, dedication, and creativity poured into the project. Further elevating this achievement, one of my designs was chosen by a faculty member from NIF Global Corporate, standing out among seven shortlisted entries. But this is not the end—it’s just the beginning. I’m now more inspired than ever to push creative boundaries and grow as a designer.
The final garment featured a one-piece ensemble with elegant bell sleeves and a detachable cape, intricately embroidered with Shilabalika motifs. This added a rich cultural narrative to the design, seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary style in perfect alignment with the theme. To reinforce sustainability, we used handwoven khadi fabric—an eco-friendly textile sourced from Khadi Gramodyog in Hubli. Its texture, authenticity, and low environmental impact made it an ideal choice for conscious fashion.
I am immensely grateful to my mentors at NIF Global, Hubli for their unwavering support throughout this journey. Special thanks to our Director, Mrs. Jyoti Bidasaria, our Principal, Mrs. Vanilla, and our Design Mentor, Mrs. Vinuta Sandeep, for their constant guidance, encouragement, and faith in my vision.
Execution of the embroidery and tailoring was brilliantly handled by our talented teammate, Mrs. Manasa Ma’am. Her skillful craftsmanship and attention to detail brought the Shilabalika motifs to life with exceptional finesse. Although we faced a slight delay in receiving the completed garment, thanks to the dedicated support of our faculty—especially Ms. Vasanta Ma’am—we managed to dispatch it to Chandigarh just in time.
This was my first international project, and it has been an incredibly enriching experience. I’ve not only gained technical and creative skills but also grown immensely in terms of teamwork, professionalism, and time management. The opportunity to represent my institution on a global platform has been a major milestone in my journey as a designer.
Their timely support ensured that everything came together seamlessly. And then, the big day arrived—we proudly showcased our creation at London Fashion Week, bringing our vision to life on an international stage. It was a moment of fulfillment, pride, and inspiration that I will carry with me forever.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank all my supportive faculty members and my incredible teammates. Your belief in our shared vision made this journey truly unforgettable. And finally, thank you to NIF Global, Hubli for providing this exceptional opportunity and platform to express our creativity on a global stage. This experience has been a defining chapter in my growth as a designer.
